"First say to yourself what you would be;
and then do what you have to do.
Is freedom anything else than the right
to live as we wish? Nothing else."
Epictetus

We all want to be happy, to feel loved, connected and free in our lives. How we do this and how well we can do this is the subject of examination in psychotherapy – obstacles to being how you want to be can be examined, understood, thought about, and changed. People who make this commitment reap the benefits of a life that is more productive, joyful, fulfilling and pleasurable.

There are different ways to “do” therapy, to use the therapeutic space in a way that makes sense to you – some people prefer to work in a short term, solution-oriented and focused way, whilst others need or want to work at a deep level of enquiry to address difficult or longstanding issues that take time to clarify and understand. Each is valid as, with everything in life, different things suit different people. Either way, it is a profoundly meaningful and important journey – safety with a trusted therapist makes possible the task of exploring and dealing with those things that we don’t understand or find anxiety provoking, and can lead to symptom relief at the least, or it can be deeply life-affirming or life-transformative.
