About Karen
I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience working with individuals and couples. I am fully registered member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association, a member of the Institute of Clinical Psychologists, a member of the Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy WA, and registered with Medicare and the major health funds.
I have worked in public and private settings with people from all kinds of backgrounds and life experiences who have felt stuck in self-defeating patterns or who experience difficulty in some aspect of life such as family, relationships, or work. In the past I have worked in welfare and child protection services, with street kids, with older adolescents and young adults in a university setting, with adults in a psychiatric clinic and the mental health system, and in private practice for fifteen years.
As my experience and understanding grew I looked for a corresponding body of theory to make sense of it, leading to further training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. I have a particular interest in developmental structures, or how early experience ‘wires’ who we become and affects current experience, and from there creating change where these patterns no longer serve so well. Hence, one of my specialties is working with people looking for deep transformative change. Sometimes this might mean longer therapy – I firmly believe, and have experienced, that this work empowers and enables a person in all of the areas of their life, and is therefore worth the effort.
I work with adults and older adolescents in individual therapy. I also work with couples.
I can help you with:
- Personal development, difficulties achieving your goals.
- Depression, coping.
- Self esteem, self-confidence, self-doubt.
- Anxiety, stress, distress.
- Grief, loss.
- Relationship, marital & couples difficulties, trouble with intimacy.
- Trauma, recent or past.
- The effect of the past on present day living.
- Sexual issues.
- Life transitions, dealing with change.
Supervision
Clinical Psychologists: I am available for supervision on an individual for specialist registration purposes as well as for ongoing professional development. Group supervision is also possible for professional development goals. The general aim in such supervision is the development and refinement of clinical skills and the development of the clinical self.
Supervision for non Clinical Psychologists; I provide supervision to other professionals such as Social Workers, nurses, GPs, and counselors who want to develop reflective practice in their own field. This work is somewhat different to clinical supervision and the particulars are worked out to suit the needs of each group or individual.
Psycho-education: group seminars on specific topics can be arranged. For example, workplace based stress management training, one-off teaching seminars such as psychological issues in weight loss for GPs, depression and anxiety management lectures and so on. If you are interested in something like this, I generally need sufficient notice to do it.
If you have questions please call reception on (08) 9433 6002 - your enquiry is welcome.
