We assess the issues each person brings to therapy in order to formulate the best way to tackle them. This may or may not involve formal psychometric assessment procedures, depending on what is indicated and how your therapist works. If you are asked to do formal assessments, they will be explained to you beforehand, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss it.

Treatment generally follows on from the assessments made – for more information about types (modalities) of psychological treatment, please go to the What is Psychotherapy page.

Sessions (consultations) & how they work

There are no fixed number of sessions; needs vary and people come as often as they need to, want to and what can be managed with regards to time and affordability. Even though sessions are paced to take all of these factors into account, people mostly come weekly or fortnightly.

Sessions run for 50 minutes.

Consultations are completely confidential, within the parameters of the law. There are limited circumstances in which confidentiality can be overridden, and these will be explained to you in your first appointment. Otherwise your attendance and consultations are private and will not be discussed with anyone without your consent.

On your first visit: All you need to bring to your first session is your referral, if you have one. Once inside, you will find our reception area immediately to your left. Our receptionist, Rhoda or Anna, will help you with the initial forms and procedures. If reception is unattended when you arrive (e.g. after hours) your therapist will come to collect you from the waiting room at the appointed time and will explain to you everything you need to know about how it all works.

In general, the expectations of you are:

  • To arrive on time for appointments.
  • To pay your fees at the time of your appointment. (see our Fees & Rebates)
  • To keep whatever agreements are made with your therapist in the course of your therapy.
  • To give adequate notice of cancellations (see our Policy)

Supervision & Consulting Services

As well as Clinical services, FCP Clinical and Counselling Psychologists are able to provide professional supervision and consultation services.

We supervise individuals and work groups. Sometimes we supervise a number of people in the same profession together who wish to share the cost and benefit from sharing their work with colleagues. Most people come to supervision every 2-4 weeks. Others come on an "as needs" basis. The frequency of supervision sessions would be discussed initially with your supervisor who would then work out with you what was best.

Teaching and training services are available as well. These tend to be organized according to the specific needs of a given agency.

Clinical Supervision

It probably helps to think about the word itself ie super (as in extra, more, bigger etc) and vision (as in sight, seeing, viewing). Supervision provides extra-sight or better and broader and deeper understanding of your work. Those of us at FCP who provide supervision are particularly skilled at working with someone to help them look closely at their work and develop with them a much deeper and insightful understanding of this work.

Clinical supervision is provided to Clinical psychologist registrars in accordance with licensing and registration requirements, Clinical Psychologists seeking ongoing professional supervision, or those seeking situational specific supervision. The aim of clinical supervision is to develop clinical and therapeutic skills and depth of understanding. Supervision involves discussing your work with clients in detail with the supervisor in a confidential and safe environment. You receive empathy, understanding, explanation and illumination of your work and it's difficulties as well as practical ideas about how to deal with difficult cases and people.

Usually when someone contacts us for supervision we make an initial appointment to discuss with you in detail what you want to gain from supervision and to talk to you about what we can offer you. If the supervisor and supervisee both feel it would be an appropriate "fit" then they would discuss and agree upon how often supervision will occur, what kinds of things will be focused on and any other particular requirement of the supervision.

Supervisees usually describe supervision as invaluable to their work and to their emotional health in the workplace. It generally increases their confidence, reduces their anxiety, increases their skill level and increases their work satisfaction. Most people who experience good supervision decide to continue supervision throughout their professional career.

All the Specialist Psychologists at FCP have regular professional supervision of their own as part of FCP’s best practice model.

Clinical Consultation

This kind of supervision is for those seeking reflective practice in their work, but does not focus on development of specific clinical skills and techniques. It suits a range of professional groups who have their own grounding in their particular training and who want to think more deeply about their practices.

As above, an initial appointment allows the particular needs of an individual or group to be discussed and suitable arrangements made.

Consultation and Education

These services are provided for agencies, groups, and individuals who want assistance with issues such as functioning within a workplace, or psycho-educational presentations on a particular topic, or individually designed lectures, seminars and group work.

Given the specificity of needs, it is best to call to discuss what you want.
